Self closing Waterdam SCW
Because of the global warming extreme weatherconditions occur more and more, causing great troubles because of flooding. There is a growing demand for extra high barriers along riversides or around houses and buildings. To solve this Fydro has a truly unique system, the Selfclosing Waterdam SCW.

The principle
The selfclosing waterdam (SCW), is constructed in such a way that it  provides an extra high protection barrier at extreme high water level in rivers and inland waterways. The SCW can be built in the top of a dike, quay or  into the ground around houses and buildings.

When the water level is normal the dam will disappear in the ground and will be almost invisible. A lid closes off the dam.


When the water rises to a critical level the basin of the SCW fills up. The polyester wall will start floating and rise above the ground. When the basin is totally filled up with water, the wall will be locked watertight. Now, the water can rise further without flooding the area behind the SCW.


When the water level subsides to normal the basin will be drained off into the river through a drainpipe. Once the water has left the basin, the wall returns to rest within the basin, the lid on top of the dam closes, keeping debris out.
The great advantage of this system is that quays and dikes do not need to be raised, the system is easy to construct and is always stand-by without the need of electrical or manual operation. Another important plus is that thanks to the invisible building-in into the terrain, the environment is not affected.

The SCW is therefore extremely suitable for urban areas.

The selfclosing waterdam can be  used around buildings in areas where flooding forms a serious threat. The system can also be employed to protect complete urban districts or industrial areas against flooding.

The great advantage of the SCW is that dikes and quays do not have to be raised. The system can easily be built in, is environmentally friendly and more appealing than constructing higher dikes and quays.

On the whole this system is far easier, quicker and therefore cheaper to construct than any other water-defence system. Still, the SCW is a permanent durable construction, which will function time and time again whenever the water starts to rise above the critical level.

The SCW waterdam is internationally decorated with prominent awards.

  • The Gold Medal for the best Civil Technical Invention in the world in 1996 by the 24e Salon International des Inventions.
  • Awarded as the best suggested solution to a real problem connected with improvements of conditions of society by Recherche Centre Battelle at Genève. 
  • Awarded for the National Dutch Millenium 2000 Award.

  • Awarded as the most original and creative developed plan for "Civil Engineering, Public Works and Constructions" by the Principality of Monaco.
  • Nominated for the best invention in The Netherlands in 1996.
  • Awarded with a bronze medal for Constructions at the Inpexshow 2000 at Pitsburgh PE.

Technical Data
The basins of the SCW are manufactured in steel or concrete and have a standard module-length. These modules are connected  on the building-site so that the theoretical length  is unlimited. However, to facilitate periodical inspection it is advised to construct separated  sections of maximally one hundred meter. The steel basins are entirely thermogalvanized which guarantees a long life span.

The floating wall is manufactured of polyester and is filled with synthetic foam. The fibre reinforcement and the foam-filling combine a high impact-resistance with a great buoyancy. Between the sections there is a water-tight joint.

At the top of the basin there are two support blocks which are designed in such a way that the wall locks itself watertight with a rubber-profile against one of these blocks.

De The SCW is easy to install. The ultimate  performance of the system is that quick and reliable that at the end it makes the SCW more profitable than other alternatives.
